Welcome to our first layer cake mystery quilt sew along!
Finished quilt size – 70” x 70”
1 Layer Cake (you can also use fat 8th, fat quarter bundles or scraps
3 yards of background fabric
¾ yard of binding fabric
4.5 yards of backing
Border 2.25 yards (optional)
Please do not starch your fabric unless you are using fabric larger than a layer cake.
Background Fabric:
Cut the following from your background fabric for each block:
• Cut one 4.5” x WOF strip. Cut into four 4.5” x 4.5” squares (48 for entire quilt)
• Cut one 5” x WOF strip. Cut into four 5” x 5” squares (48 for entire quilt)
Choose three 10” x 10” layer cake pieces that are complimentary to each other. Two will be larger (more prominent) in the quilt and one will be small (less prominent). Label each color as A, B and C.
• Color A: Cut four 4.5” x 4.5” squares
• Color B: Cut Four 5” x 5” squares
• Color C: Cut twelve 1.5” x 1.5” squares. Nine will be used in the block. Set other three aside.
