CLUE # 6 – BASKET BLOCK
AND SQUARE IN A SQUARE ACCENT BLOCK
BASKETS AND BASKETS!
The Basket block has evolved over time. In the mid-19th century, pieced basket patterns became a popular motif for quilt makers. The variety of ways we use baskets in quilts is endless, from baskets with handles to those without, appliqued with fruits and flowers or various pieced basket patterns… Here we have created our own Open Handle Baskets. And, to make them even more unique we used an uncommon novelty print, instead of the traditional textured print. As you know there are no rules in quilting, so make your basket in your own special style!
Now that we are making our way through the main blocks, we need to start adding some of the accent blocks and our first one is the traditional Square in a Square Block. We have quite a few of these to make, so here is a tip to make perfect Square-in-a-Square quilt blocks every time! Try the Square in a Square Foundation paper from Its Sew Emma. Shaded and numbered templates make this simple paper piecing fuss-free. Each pad makes 42 Square-in-a-Square quilt blocks. This fantastic tool comes in a variety of sizes; for our Mystery Quilt you will need the 4″ square in a square pack. You can find it on our website, www.bellarosequilts.com.
